Summary

We seldom want to receive a gift just for the object itself. Instead, we value what that gift will DO or how it will change our lives. We often call Pentecost “the birthday of the Church”, but the gift that the Church received that day was not just the gift of languages or some other miracle. The real gift was what that gift would DO. It communicated the gospel, the good news of salvation, to the lost. Martin Luther wrote, at the end of his notes on Galatians, “The Lord who has given us the power to teach and to hear, let Him also give us the power to serve and to do.”
